Now that the role of IgE in atopic allergy is at least partly understood, a more rational approach to sting anaphylaxis is possible through the use of venoms rather than whole body extracts of Hymenoptera for both diagnostic testing and desensitization therapy. However, there remains the problem of overcoming bureaucratic barriers that prevent practicing physicians from utilizing this new approach.
