The FRJ-2 in Julich was put into operation on November 14, 1962. The DIDO-class research reactor serves as a neutron source to study the structure of matter and for materials research. A cold source with a helium liquefaction plant is available for the experimental facilities. The hot cells at the site offer possibilities of post-irradiation examination, damage determination, and repair to radioactive components. The FRJ-2 was refurbished from 1991 to 1994 and again went into operation at the beginning of 1995.
