For the last few years, the taxanes*formed the focus of intense media scrutiny in the UK. They were the epitome of so-called 'postcode prescribing': people in one health authority received a drug denied to others because the authorities took different views about the evidence base. Prime Minister Tony Blair pledged to end postcode prescribing, largely by using the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).
