An experiment is described that allows students to compare the predictions of several models for the drag force with observations made in the laboratory. The students can determine the ranges of validity of the Stokes’s law and Newton’s law expressions for the drag force as well as discover the good agreement with experiment obtained by the numerical solution of the exact equation of motion. The computer program devised for this purpose can be used to simulate the motion of falling objects in situations not directly covered in the laboratory.
