The karyotype ofGossypium herbaceumvar.africanumreveals that it has five chromosomes with median centromeres, three with slightly submedian centromeres, and five with submedian centromeres. Chromosome 7 and 12 have satellites. The satellite of chromosome 7 is about twice as a large as that of chromosome 12. These satellites could be on a long stalk, or very close to the rest of the chromosome. The total complement length was found to have a mean of 66.12 microns, and an average length of 2.54 microns per chromosome.
