The patient undergoing valvular replacement surgery may be at risk for a particular type of malnutrition—cardiac cachexia. Recognition of the nutritional needs of the cachectic valvular patient and formulation of nursing interventions effective in meeting those needs are an essential part of the nursing care of this high-risk population.
