AbstractThis paper demonstrates the internal relations of the error ellipsoid and error ellipses in a horizontal control network. The research indicates that principal component analysis may not directly represent the position error of control points. The difference between the directions of ellipsoidal principal components and those of the major axes of error ellipses may be significant. Therefore, when applying principal component analysis to a horizontal control network, special attention should be paid to this problem.
