The author reports for the first time that a critical feature arising from the fluctuations of the order parameter in the smectic-A <—> nematic (Sm-A <—>N) phase transitions of 4-cyano-4′-n-octylbiphenyl (8CB) and 4-cyano-4′-n-nonanylbiphenyl (9CB) can be clearly observed from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)13CT1(spin-lattice) andT2(spin-spin) relaxation times.
