AbstractThis paper offers a frank discussion of the difficulties involved in developing a standardized data base. These difficulties include: agreement on diagnostic coding, compliance in input of data, philosophical differences among the schools and colleges of optometry, assessment of clinical competence, and comparison among institutions.
