A brief survey is presented of some mathematical details of the study of symmetry in 4‐dimensional Lorentz manifolds with applications to general relativity. The main symmetry studied is local isometry but the other symmetries encountered in Einstein’s theory are also briefly discussed. © 2004 American Institute of Physics
