In response to the difficulties experienced by individual members of the farming population involved in the structural adjustment of agriculture, socio‐economic advisory services were introduced in member states of the European Community (Directive 72/161/EEC). This paper describes the establishment of these services and the introduction of socio‐economic advice in 1975 in England and Wales, through the Agricultural Development and Advisory (A.D.A.S.) of the Ministry of Agriculture, fisheries and Food (M.A.F.F.). The potential success of this service as could have been predicted before it began operation is then considered.
