摘要:

&NA;The purpose of this study is to present early developmental data on a group of low‐birthweight infants with normal developmental outcomes. Subjects were 118 infants initially assessed at 4 months corrected age on the Bayley Scales of Infant Development and the Movement Assessment of Infants (MAI) as part of a high‐risk infant follow‐up project. In addition to describing the performance of these infants on the Bayley at 4 and 12 months and on the MAI at 4 months, their mental and motor performance on both tests at 4 months was compared to that of a group of 36 infants later diagnosed as having cerebral palsy (CP). Results for the infants with normal outcomes showed that the mean Bayley Mental scores at 4 and 12 months were substantially above the normative means; the Bayley Mental scores were significantly higher than the Bayley Motor scores at 12 months. Thirty‐eight percent of the 118 infants had MAI total risk scores in the “at‐risk” range (≥8) based on criteria in the MAI manual. The CP group had significantly lower Bayley scores and significantly higher MAI total risk scores than the nonhandicapped group. These findings, combined with those of other recent studies, suggest that additional and updated normative data would strengthen both the research and clinical value of the Bayley and the MAI.
