The nursing literature and the school health literature is filled with theoretical and clinical articles about the“role”of the school nurse. Yet, how the school nurse can function in such a way as to help the student achieve his/her potential for participation and responsibility in personal health and illness behavior is not so obvious. The authors have attempted to provide a framework for clinical practice in the school setting and have used anecdotes to illustrate how the role of the school nurse might influence the health behaviors of students.
