AbstractSimple repetitive DNA sequences have been regarded as mere “junk” present in all eukaryotic genomes. In fact, mixed simple repeat (gt)n(ga)msequences are present in major histocompatibility complexMHC‐DRBgenes for long evolutionary times, including such distant animals as artiodactyla and man.
