Corticotropin releasing hormone, the most potent and effective natural stimulant of ACTH secretion, does not act in isolation. A number of other substances that subtly modulate the activity of corticotropic cells have been identified. The complex orchestration of their roles in generating stress responses is reviewed in this first of a group of articles updating developments in neuroendocrinology.
