For cancer victims undergoing chemotherapy, the nightmare of their disease doesn–t end when treatment begings. The nausea, vomiting and other side effects associated with chemotherapy are often worse than the symptoms of the disease itself. Many patients become physically ill at the mere thought of chemotherapy. The solution may be to have patients concentrate on muscle relaxation and soothing mental images, says Vanderbilt psychologist Thomas G. Burish. By teaching cancer patients the techniques of muscle relaxation, he has been able to significantly reduce the anxiety-related effects of chemotherapy.
