Convenient syntheses of the biologically important 3,6-dideoxyhexoses paratose (12) and tyvelose (8) from the readily available chlorodeoxy sugar methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-3-chloro-3-deoxy-β-D-allopy-ranoside (1) are described.
