A number of palynomorphs of Palaeocene and Eocene age and Australasian origin, commonly attributed to the family Proteaceae, is compared to modern genera and species using a combination of conventional light microscopy, phase contrast and scanning electron microscopy. A significant percentage of these appears to be closely comparable to modern Proteaceae taxa. Comparisons permit the recognition of three modern subfamilies, eight tribes and eight to ten subtribes.
