The problem of pole and zero retention in multivariable system reduction is regarded as the generation of a series factorization of the system transfer function matrix. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the factorization are derived in terms of the decomposition of the state space intoA-invariant and {A, B}-invariant subspaces.
