摘要:

SUMMARYThe presence and distribution ofGonatorrhodiella Highlei A.L. Smith, one of the rarer members of the Fungi Imperfecti collected originally in England on onion bulbs, are reported for the first time in the United States.G. Highleiis particularly interesting not only because of its unusual morphology, but also because of its association withNectria coccinea, which together withCryptococcus Fagiis concerned with the beech bark disease of our native beech (Fagus grandifolia) in New England.A comparison ofGonatorrhodiella Highleiwas made withG. parasiticaand other species of this genus. As a result of these studies, it was concluded that at present there are only two valid species ofGonatorrhodiella, G. parasiticaandG. Highlei, known. Two other species have been described, butG. eximiaseems to be synonymous withG. parasitica, whileG. coccorumis not a member of the genus.Gonatorrhodiella Highleiproduced only a scant mycelial growth and a few conidiophores on synthetic malt and only a trace of vegetative growth on potato, potato-dextrose, and malt agars. But it grew luxuriantly and produced an abundance of conidiophores on a medium consisting of 20 grams of oatmeal and 60 cc. of distilled water. When planted withNectria coccinea, N. galligena, orN. cucurbitulaon potato, potato-dextrose, or malt-extract agar,Gonatorrhodiella Highleigrew abundantly and produced numerous fertile hyphae. It failed to grow, however, when it was planted on the same media with eitherN. CoryliorN. cinnabarina.
