Birth radically changes the hemodynamic patterns of the circulatory system. It is after these changes occur that congenital anatomic anomalies, with which the fetus has been living quite compatibly, may manifest themselves in the form of deficiencies in the transport of oxygen to the tissues. And when the compensatory mechanisms usually established are outstripped, cardiac failure is likely to ensue.
