AbstractMany countries including the United States and Canada have a patchwork quilt coverage of Lambert's and transverse Mercator projection systems, each with its own standard parallel or central meridian, zone width and scale factor. For the developing countries of Asia, where there is an opportunity to introduce a unified system for the whole country, it would be irresponsible to allow the growth of a hotch-potch of different systems. In this paper a comparative study has been carried out, between 2°and 3°transverse Mercator zones for India, and it has been concluded that the best projection for survey integration would be a series of 2°transverse Mercator zones with an appropriate central scale factor.
