Microorganisms previously disregarded, unknown, or known by other names now make up a significant proportion of the pathogens responsible for human infectious diseases. In this first article of a new series, the clinical manifestations of the new, the“obscure,”and the renamed pathogens are discussed in terms of the differentiation, diagnosis, and management of specific diseases.
