A fixed-dose combination of the calcium channel antagonist, amlodipine, and the ACE inhibitor, benazepril, is effective and well tolerated in the treatment of hypertension in a broad range of patients with mild-to-moderate hypertension, according to results from the LOGIC*study presented at the 17 th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hypertension [New York, US; May 2002]. This community-based study showed that significant additional reductions in BP occurred after switching from amlodipine monotherapy to combination therapy with amlodipine/benazepril ['Lotrel']. Furthermore, the incidence and severity of pedal oedema were significantly reduced with combination therapy among patients who had experienced this adverse event when receiving amlodipine alone. Two other studies presented at the meeting, ALERT and SHIELD,**also demonstrated the efficacy of amlodipine/benazepril.
