A nationwide collaborative study has shown that viral infection in utero is more frequent than had been expected, especially in poorer populations. This status report discusses the frequency of various viral infections and their relationship to teratogenesis and indicates what is known about immunologic responses to these viruses, particularly as reflected in serum levels of immunoglobulin G.
