Although cryosurgery remains an investigational technique for treatment of localized prostate cancer, preliminary reports from several institutions demonstrate promising results. In the short term, most patients have undetectable cancer on follow-up biopsy and very low prostate-specific antigen levels. The procedure is associated with moderate morbidity. Adequate urethral warming is particularly important in preventing urinary retention and incontinence.
