Rural areas pose special barriers to providing early intervention services to children with special health care needs. These barriers include transportation, long-distance travel, lack of specialized personnel, and issues of poverty. Provision of nutrition services in rural areas is affected by all these Issues along with the issues of adequate reimbursement for qualified personnel and the recognition of the importance of nutrition for the optimal growth of the child. Recommendations for development of referral networks and for training personnel are provided.
