A thermobalance was designed and constructed that operated up to 3000°K in vacuum or inert atmosphere. The temperature was limited by the power supply. Its utility was first demonstrated by measuring the vapor pressure of niobium. A unique heater uses standard tungsten welding rods with a tantalum expansion joint. This design allows efficient transfer of metal vapor to the cooler shields.
