AbstractThe European Commission has just proposed four multiannual research programmes concerning respectively thermonuclear fusion and plasma physics, biology and health protection, environment research and the setting up of a Community Bureau of Reference. Some 335 million units of account (1 u.a. = approximately US $1.3) are requested by the Commission for these four programmes. Two of these programmes are discussed in detail below.
