Investigations of norepinephrine as a sympathetic neurotransmitter, as well as the precursors and enzymes essential to its production, provide evidence that both central and peripheral sympathetic nervous activity may be causally related to essential hypertension. The situation is complex, however, and further studies are needed, especially in normotensives and individuals with early hypertension.
