SummaryKnowledge of the serum protein binding of drugs can be of clinical importance. After discussing the different methodological aspects of measuring protein binding, the effects of binding on different pharmacokinetic parameters are reviewed. Drug protein binding in serum can change: interaction between drugs and the influence of renal failure, liver disease and age upon the binding are surveyed. Finally the problem of monitoring plasma levels of drugs in the presence of changed protein binding is mentioned.
