Somatropin [recombinant human growth hormone, rHGH; 'Serostim'] is effective in the treatment of HIV-associated adipose redistribution syndrome (HARS), according to 12-week results from the phase II/III 'Serostim' for the Treatment of Adipose Redistribution Syndrome (STARS) study presented at the XIV International AIDS Conference [Barcelona, Spain; July 2002]. A separate phase IV post-marketing study presented at the meeting confirmed the efficacy of 'Serostim' in the treatment of HIV-associated wasting.
