The uptake capacity of six natural local clays and one synthetic resin for thorium and uranium was determined at optimum pH values, fine mesh size of the clay and maximum time of uptake. The capacity of clay-4 was found to be 30 meg/100 g for Th4+, and 14 meg/100 g for. Precise estimation of uranium and thorium was made using a developed spectrophotometric method. Static and dynamic studies have been carried out. Kinetic studies on the ion exchange behaviour of thorium and uranium revealed two processes, a fast uptake mechanism at low pH due to ionic species and a slow one at higher pH due to polymeric species.
