SummaryTwo reflectance photometers, recently available in Belgium, were assessed for accuracy and precision in determining venous blood glucose.The Glucoscot/Glucopat system (A. Menarini, Diagnostics Department, Italy) was compared with the Reflolux/Haemo-Glukotest 20–800R system (Boehringer-Mannheim, West Germany). There was an excellent correlation between glucose concentrations by the laboratory method and Glucoscot (r = 0.9899) or Reflolux (r = 0.9928) reflectance photometer results.We found that we could visually read the Haemo-Glukotest 20–800R reagent strip accurately while with the Glucopat strip we underestimated glucose values higher than 250 mg/dl.Although clearly better results can be obtained by using a meter than by visually reading the strips we conclude that either of the assessed techniques can be used in blood glucose monitoring.
