Biofilters comprise a packed bed of (often compressible) natural materials containing immobilised micro-organisms which digest the volatile organic compounds (VOC) in air streams. This paper surveys the current literature about their design and shows how an economically optimal scheme to redistribute the bed periodically may be obtained. In addition, an outline of an optimal design model is presented.
