The increased use of Hickman catheters nationwide has led to a need for standardization in their management. Because Dr. Hickman developed the catheters in Seattle, nurses in this area have had extensive experience with them. For years, these nurses have been identified and used as resources by other nurses nationwide. In 1982, a committee of nurses was formed representing several institutions in the Seattle area to develop standardized Hickman catheter care procedures. The evolution of this committee is followed by the final versions of the procedures.
