AbstractPublic education and improved surgical techniques are responsible for saving the lives of increasing numbers of individuals with carcinoma of the larynx many of whom seek training in alaryngeal voice from speech pathologists. An approach to teaching esophageal voice to veterans is described in detail beginning with the presurgical conference and continuing through final suggestions to the family and, in some instances, to the employer. The final section reports several investigations concerning psychological aspects of rehabilitation of the laryngectomized.
