Researchers believe that they may now be close to determining the structure of receptor-activated calcium channels (RACCs) that occur in cells throughout the body. This information could be used to develop specific RACC inhibitors with therapeutic potential in diseases in which excess calcium ion [Ca2+] influx is thought to be involved. In particular, new agents for use in hypertension, cancer and inflammatory diseases, may be on the horizon.Inpharma® spoke to Professor Greg Barritt from Adelaide Flinders University, Australia about his research into RACCs and his predictions for future discoveries.
