Avoiding flow-induced vibration damage is a major concern to the designers and operators of shell-and-tube heat exchangers. This paper discusses the characteristics of tube vibration as determined from a research program featuring tests of an industrial-size exchanger. The state of the art in understanding and predicting tube vibration and shell-side flow distribution is briefly reviewed. Finally, research needs are identified and discussed.
