Barriers between the male's immune system and his germ cells have been presumed. However, they turn out to be imperfect, which suggests that autoimmune attack may be prevented in part by chronic exposure of T lymphocytes to tolerogenic doses of“foreign”germ cell antigens. Breakdowns in such active immunoregulation may account for some cases of unexplained infertility.
