AbstractDuring the 18th Century the earlier improvements in mathematical education at University level percolated through to the Schools, resulting in a significant improvement in the mathematical knowledge of ordinary surveyors. It led also to a larger number of individuals being qualified to enter their ranks. This coincided with an increased demand for land surveys resulting from changes in the practice of agriculture and the distribution of farmland.
