AbstractThe processes leading to changes in the meanings of bryological names in the nearly two millenia from their earliest appearance to 1500 A.D. are described and exemplified, with a more detailed account of the histories of the liverwort words:Lichen, (H)epatica, Pulmonaria, Jecoraria, Fegatella.
