In the absence of clear-cut epidemiologic clues to a viral etiology suggesting a benign, self-limited course, hospital admission aids in differentiating an apparent aseptic meningitis from the many other diseases, some of them life-threatening, that may present in the same way. It also provides an optimal setting for the supportive and rehabilitative care many children require for total return of motor function.
