Endocarditis prophylaxis remains somewhat empiric, and somewhat controversial. Most authorities agree that it is advisable for patients whose cardiovascular status places them at increased risk and who are undergoing procedures that have been associated with endocarditis. New information that may affect future revisions of American Heart Association criteria is discussed.
