摘要:

A mapping in the mid-1970s of “the South” and “Dixie,” based on entries beginning with those words in metropolitan telephone directories, is replicated in the mid-1980s. For “the South” results are roughly the same, although the northern and western boundaries have moved slightly south and east, and southern Florida has dropped out. In addition, parts of North Carolina and Arkansas and all of peninsular Florida have dropped out of the South's core area, by this measure. For “Dixie” the erosion is more extreme. At even moderate levels significant parts of the 1976 region are no longer included; at relatively high levels Dixie simply disappears as a coherent region. In particular, this measure excludes from Dixie even parts of the Deep South, including most of Alabama.
