AbstractThe industrial benefits of plasma nitriding and nitrocarburising over conventional processes are reviewed with particular emphasis on environmental benefits. The cost savings and improved quality control obtainable using plasma nitriding are demonstrated with examples drawn mainly from the automotive sector, including gears and injection nozzles; comparisons between different processing conditions are also drawn. Industrial applications of plasma carburising are given and discussed.
