When a two-beam interferometer is adjusted to satisfy particular compensation conditions, high-contrast fringes can be obtained when the light source is neither small nor highly monochromatic. In some interferometers a continuous variation of compensation is desirable. Two adjustable compensators are discussed and their application to a lens-testing interferometer is described.
