Abstract and SummaryDistance estimation ofSalamandra salamandra(L.) was tested in subjects that were binocular, irreversibly monocularized (by extirpation of one eye), or reversibly monocularized (by covering one eye with a cap). Experiments with binocular salamanders showed that the direction of the approach to a prey dummy depends on the distance from the dummy. This correlation was also observed in irreversibly monocularized animals, but not in reversibly monocularized ones. The frequency of captures of living prey by irreversibly monocularized subjects was as high as in the case of binocular ones. However, the reversibly monocularized salamanders hit the prey significantly less frequently. In contrast to the irreversibly monocularized subjects, the reversibly monocularized salamanders were not able to estimate the distance from a prey object correctly. One can assume that salamanders possess two systems of depth perception: a binocular and a monocular system. Only irreversibly monocularized animals are able to compensate for the loss of binocularity by means of the monocular system.
