In contrast with the acquired vitamin deficiencies, vitamin dependencies respond not to physiologic replacement therapy but only to pharmacologic doses of the missing substance. Study of these inherited abnormalities has shed considerable light on the biochemical roles normally played by vitamins, making it clear that most, if not all, serve as coenzymes to facilitate a variety of metabolic processes.
