SUMMARYBipolar asymmetry has been considered a morphological characteristic sufficient for differentiation of genera among the Desmidiaceae. Therefore,Micrasterias sudanensisGrönbl., Prowse&Scott, the only species ofMicrasteriasshowing such asymmetry, is made the type of a new genus,Prescottiella, gen. nov
